Hollywood star Keanu Reeves has revealed that he has been secretly married to his former co-star Winona Ryder for the past 30 years – well, sort of.
While Reeves has been with his partner, artist Alexandra Grant, for some years, and Ryder has been in a relationship with Scott Mackinlay Hahn for more than a decade, he says that he and Ryder tied the knot back in 1992 on the set of the hit film Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
In one famous scene, the pair are married, but instead of using an actor to play the priest, as is usual, a real one was used. So, this must mean that their vows had to be taken seriously – well, at least that’s what some think.
“We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests,” Reeves said in an interview published in Esquire. “Winona says we are. [Dracula’s director, Francis Ford] Coppola says we are. So I guess we’re married under the eyes of God.”
Ryder has also backed this theory up in previous interviews. In 2018, she was quoted in Entertainment Weekly, talking about that scene, saying: “I swear to God I think we’re married in real life.”
But whether the marriage would stand up or not – and you would suspect not – the references in interviews demonstrate how Reeves and Ryder have remained good friends since filming the movie together. While both tend to stay out of the limelight these days and prefer a quiet life when not on movie promotion duties, you can imagine them meeting up and reminiscing fondly about those days.
